Hello ELS families!
February has come and gone in the blink of an eye! This month has been packed with fun themes and activities.

Students and staff loved celebrating Valentine’s Day. All of the students attended their homeroom class parties and exchanged valentines with their peers. In the ELS classroom, students practiced giving each other compliments during speech group. It was very sweet to hear all of the nice things everyone said.
New team member alert! Lena is the new OT in the ELS classroom. This week we have been celebrating Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss. During OT group, students made oobleck and read the book Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss. Students had a blast touching the slimy oobleck and running it through their fingers.
During Adapted Art, students continued to celebrate Dr. Seuss this week by reading the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Students made fish bowls and wrote out lines from the story. Students turned their handprints into fish by adding a googly eye. Earlier in the month, students learned about Esports. The class focused on playing games and made a game collage during Adapted Art. Ms. Hausman set up stations for students to play games and pick out items for their collage.
A special guest joined us for cooking this month, Ms. Vena the school principal! The class made Blues Blueberry Smoothies to go along with our Famous Musicians News-2-You theme. Ms. Vena and the class said “cheers” before drinking the delicious smoothies. Another favorite recipe this month was Fruit Fury Salad, which went along with the How to Train Your Dragon theme. The class loved watching the trailer for the new movie. Students have started taking quizzes on their iPads after every cooking project. This is intended to help students increase their independence and assess their understanding.
On community this month, we have continued to practice asking for help in new settings. We went to Northbrook Court mall and asked Starbucks workers for help locating stores on our scavenger hunt. Students practiced identifying strangers vs. Starbucks workers by looking for people wearing a green apron with the Starbucks logo. The class also went to Jewel Osco to find our cooking ingredients for that week. We ran into a group of firefighters that talked with our class for a little. Hopefully later in the year we will be able to go visit them at the fire station!
